Car Covers Glossary
Acid Rain
Acid rain happens in industrial belts having a high pollution level where sulpher and nitrogen emissions come in contact with the atmosphere. The main culprits that cause these rains are the industrial power generating plants and vehicular pollution. These rains are bad news as significant damage to life forms is caused.
Bimini tops
Bimini tops are made of canvas. These covers are mainly used for marine purposes like shelters for boats.
Breathable
Breathability of the fabric allows free circulation of vapor and heat. When moisture gets trapped within the car cover it makes your vehicle shoddy. But if the fabric is breathable then this will never happen.
Composite
The composite is made of two or more substances. Each of these substances has different physical characteristics. A substance is termed as a composite when each of these substances retains their specific characteristics but also contributes properties to the whole.
Denier
Unit of fineness for yarn is called Denier. The finesse of yarn should be equal to the fineness weighing one gram for each 9000 meters. A 100-denier yarn will be finer than one that is a 150-denier yarn. This means the lower it is, the finer it will be.
Loft
The thickness of an insulated material or a fabric is known as loft.
Long-term storage
Long-term storage is a term, which is used to refer to all those vehicles that are covered for extended periods and are thus not in used.
Lycra/spandex
Lycra is a polyurethane textile fiber with stretchable properties.
Mildew
Whitish fungus growth is known as mildew.
Napped finish
Napped finish has a hairy, downy and elevated finish.
Photo degradation
Harsh ultra violet rays (UV) results in fading, cracking, discoloration and chalking. However there are some advantages too. It can transform ambergris (bile found inside the intestine of a sperm whale) into perfume ingredients.
Polyethylene
Polyethylene is a polymer of ethylene, which is both moisture and chemical resistant. Polyethylene has excellent insulating properties and is used in packaging and insulation.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is developed by cracking the petroleum hydrocarbons. Polypropylene is often used in organic synthesis. Polypropylene is also a polymer of propylene.
Solution dyed
The process by which colors are added during the production of fibers is called “solution dyed”. Solution dyed is a process by which fibers are spun into the yarn. This technique gives the fabric a uniform permeated color that lasts long.
Universal car cover
Also known as the “shower cap”, the universal covers are designed to fit many different automobiles. The covers are made of a standard size. However these covers hardly fit the vehicle well. Often they are not friendly to the body of the automobile as well.
UV
UV is the ultra violet rays of the sun. Ultra violet rays are invisible to the naked eye but they can cause harm. These rays cause photo degradation discoloring and damaging the vehicle.
UV resistant
UV resistant is a term used for anything that can block the UV rays.
Water Resistant
Fabrics that block the penetration of water are known as water resistant.
